While they reside in different divisions, both programs have grown familiar with one another in recent seasons. Penn State holds the all-time advantage in the series, winning 17 of the 30 meetings. That includes four wins against the Hawkeyes in the last five years, though Iowa won last season’s meeting at Penn State 41-21.
We’re to the mid-point in the 2021 season and the Iowa Hawkeyes are set to embark on a historic journey. Regardless of how this season ends, Iowa finds itself the answer to a college football trivia question this weekend as the #3 Hawkeyes host the #4 Penn State Nittany Lions in the first Big Ten game between two top-5 teams that does not feature one of Ohio State or Michigan.
Coming off the heels of a 51-point night (accrued in barely more than three quarters in Maryland), the Iowa offense faces an elite defense. Penn State is fresh off a 24-0 shutout of Indiana and ranks No. 3 nationally in scoring defense (12.0 points per game, just behind No. 2 Iowa’s 11.6).
Iowa vs Penn State football game time
I was feeling very confident about this game. That’s until I found out longtime Nittany Lion fan Megan Robert was going to be at Kinnick on Saturday. Megan is Penn State’s kryptonite on the road. She was at Michigan and Pitt in 2016, along with the Rose Bowl against USC. Additionally, she was at the Ohio State and Michigan State games in 2017. All these losses and countless others…I just got a funny feeling about this one.
Iowa vs Penn State prediction
Don’t expect a lightning-speed shootout between these two offenses. This is going to be a classic Big Ten battle between two great defenses.
Whether Iowa’s defense can continue to force turnovers will be important. Whether Iowa’s offense can continue to take advantage of those turnovers will be even more important.
