The 28-year-old’s pair of solid playoff outings came after he put together an impressive regular season. McCullers went 13-5 with a 3.16 ERA and 3.52 FIP.

The fifth-year pro has encountered struggles against the Red Sox over the course of his career, however. McCullers currently owns a 5.40 ERA through 25 total innings against Boston dating back to 2015.

Astros vs Red Sox  Prediction

Sale has not been his usual dominant self post-Tommy John surgery, though I won’t bet against the guy. He keeps the Red Sox in the game long enough for the offense to do damage against Houston’s middle relievers, giving Boston the Game 1 win.

Pick: Red Sox 6, Astros 4

One of the reasons I’ve always liked Kyle Schwarber is that he’s an uncomplicated dude. When I remarked to someone who worked for the Cubs that Schwarber is more suited to pounding beers in postseason celebrations than any other active player, they responded with, “Man win. Man happy.” Schwarber loves hitting dingers — he hit 25 in 72 games with Washington, seven in 41 games with Boston, plus two more in five playoff games — and he loves drinking beer. Needless to say, he’s popular in Boston.

Some viewers found that wasn’t the case in the previous round. Game 3 of the AL Division Series between the Red Sox and Rays aired exclusively on the MLB Network.

That was nothing new – the league’s network has aired an ALDS game in each series for a decade, including Game 1 between the Red Sox and Astros in 2017 – but some viewers in the Boston market found out the hard way that their cable or streaming provider did not carry the network.

The Red Sox spent most of the 20th century as the Goofus to New York’s Gallant. The Yankees were expected to win World Series after World Series while the less-fortunate son was the habitual loser, constantly pulling defeat from the jaws of victory because of a curse caused by a team owner who wanted to produce a play, My Lady Friends in 1919. But the 2000s have swung things the Sox way, with Boston not just breaking its long championship-less streak but winning four championship trophies this century, the most in baseball. Yet to a large extent, the Yankees still retain the position of the big dog.

Red Sox LHP Chris Sale (5-1, 3.16 ERA regular season) makes his second start of the postseason. He lasted only one inning in that outing, giving up 5 runs on 4 hits and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts at Tampa Bay in Game 2 of the ALDS on Oct. 8. However, Boston won 14-6.

Regular season: 1.34 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9, and 11.0 K/9 through 42 2/3 IP in nine starts

Career vs. Astros (regular season): 5-3, 2.20 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 11.8 K/9 across 65 1/3 IP in nine starts

It even felt a bit like that at the trade deadline, when the Yankees got the headlines for acquiring Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo while Kyle Schwarber was seen as a Boston consolation prize. But Schwarber played better than either Gallo or Rizzo, and unlike them is still playing in 2021.

Sale, a lefty, has struggled recently and only lasted one inning in Game 2 of the ALDS at Tampa Bay, giving up five runs and four hits on 30 pitches. Sale returned to the mound for the Red Sox in August undergoing Tommy John surgery on March 30, 2020, to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm.

Cora said he’s “very comfortable” with Sale starting in Game 1.

“I don’t expect him to come out in the first inning. I expect him to go out there and pitch a good game and give us a chance to win,” Cora said.

Perhaps Correa was only trying to convince himself, but he was right about this: As bad as things get at Fenway Park for the Astros, as venomous and vitriolic as the crowd turns, it still beats by a mile another October spent playing to canned noise and cardboard cutouts.
